Junior Powerboat Level 1 Course

(8-11 years)

This course is a one day introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

Assumed Knowledge: None
Course Duration: 1 day (0930-1700).
Age: 8-11 years
Course Content: Boat preparation, crew preparation, basic boat handling, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside, being towed.
Ability after the course: able to drive a powerboat under supervision

Under 16s powerboating courses will be run in similar ages, using suitable vessels that aren't to heavy or difficult to handle.  To book an under 16 on a course, please select an under 16s specific course when booking.

Powerboat Level 2 Course

(12-15 years)

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.

Assumed Knowledge: None.May be preceded by Level 1 Start Powerboating
Course Duration: 2 day (0930-1700).
Age: 12-15 years old.  For under 16s the certificate will be endorsed to say 'to be accompanied by a responsible adult'. This will be removed on the individuals 16th birthday.
Course Content: Launching and recovery, Boat preparation, crew preparation, boat handling, securing to a mooring buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, being towed, man overboard procedures.
Ability after the course: To be a self sufficient powerboat in appropriate conditions, to be aware of own limitations, and those of the vessel.

Youth Powerboat Cruising

(12-16 years)

The Youth Powerboat Cruising course is designed for anyone who has completed an RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and would like to to build on the skills learned and to start looking at navigating and managing a boat further afield.

The course is based around the adult RYA Intermediate Course, and will look at more advanced aspects of boat handling, navigating at speed, and planning short passages by day.  It will use our new training vessels, and be delivered in a fun and informative manner by our highly experienced Advanced instructors.

Course content includes: a recap on Level 2 manoeuvres and skills, rough weather handling, navigation techniques, responsibilities as a skipper, and passage planning.

Assumed Knowledge: RYA Youth Level 2 course to have been completed.
Course Duration: 2 day (0930-1700).
Age: 12-16 years old.  Please note that this course is to develop candidates skill level and is not certificated.
Course Content: Planning an day trip, boat preparation, pilotage, passage planning, rough weather handling.
Ability after the course: To be able to plan and execute short passages under the supervision of a competent adult.

Under 16s powerboating courses will be run in similar ages, using suitable vessels that aren't too heavy or difficult to handle.  To book an under 16 on a course, please select an under 16s specific course when booking. Under 16s courses will run during school holidays throughout the year.
