Powerboat Instructor Training

Powerboat Instructors can teach in a variety of small open powerboats such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats and is aimed at a variety of users from casual leisure boaters to professional small boat skippers. As an instructor you will therefore need to have experience in a variety of boats and situations.

Minimum age: 16

Pre requisites: Candidates must attend a pre entry skills assessment prior to their instructor training course. Details can be found in the RYA Power Schemes Instructor Handbook (G19), and booked on our website.  Candidates also need a valid RYA approved First Aid certificate, a Powerboat Level 2 course completion certificate, and need to complete a Health Decleration.

Training Course: Three day course assessed by an independent Trainer on the third day.

Qualified to teach: Up to and including Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor. If you hold the Safety Boat Certificate, you may also teach the RYA Safety Boat Course.

Validity: Five years from date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.

RYA membership: Required

Health declaration

You will be asked to sign a health declaration stating that you are not suffering from any physical or mental impairment which has an adverse effect on your ability to properly discharge your duty of care as an instructor. If you are unable to sign the standard declaration, you will be required to complete a medical questionnaire.

Advanced Powerboat Instructor Training

As an instructor you will therefore need to have experience in a variety of boats and situations.

Minimum age: 17
Required certificates:

  • First aid certificate

  • RYA Powerboat Instructor

  • Advanced Powerboat Course Completion certificate

  • Health declaration form or medical questionnaire

  • Commercial Endorsement (Advanced Instructors who do not hold a valid CE will only be able to teach Intermediate powerboat)

One of the following Certificates of Competence:

  • Advanced Powerboat

  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (power)

  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (power)

Pre requisites: Logged teaching hours
Training Course: Two day course and one evening, which will include a night exercise conducted in darkness. Continuous assessment throughout the course. View course dates here.
Qualified to teach: Tender Operator, Intermediate and Advanced powerboat courses.
Validity: Five years from date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. Those teaching the Tender Operator or Advanced course will also need a current medical and commercial endorsement.

Advanced Powerboat Exam (Certificate of Competence)

The RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat exam is a practical test of skippering ability by day and night in the type of craft applicable to the National Powerboat Scheme.  Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA’s Powerboat Logbook

Assumed Knowledge:

  • 2 years relevant experience including night pilotage.

  • As a guide 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours.

  • If you hold an RYA Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate the seatime is reduced to: 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours.

  • All qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam.

Minimum age: 17
Pre requisites: SRC certificate or higher, and a valid first aid certificate
Exam duration: Minimum 4-5 hours for two candidates, 5-6 hours for three candidates.
